November 15, 2023 (Calgary, AB) – The National Afghan Refugee Resettlement Secretariat is pleased to announce the successful resettlement of more than 40,000 Afghans in over 180 communities across Canada. This significant milestone was achieved through a collaborative national effort involving the Secretariat, 42 resettlement agencies, the Government of Canada and many community and corporate partners nationwide. In July 2021, the Canadian government initially pledged to welcome 20,000 displaced Afghans, which was later doubled to at least 40,000.

As the world witnessed the fall of Kabul, Canada recognized the urgency to act and introduced one of the most substantial humanitarian commitments for Afghan refugees globally. In October, the momentous achievement of this goal was marked in just over two years, while condemning the violent actions of the Taliban. The Secretariat honours the courage and resilience of vulnerable Afghans forced to flee in the face of persecution and extends a warm welcome to new Afghan neighbours and friends who now call Canada home.

"In the wake of the events in Kabul in 2021 and amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the resettlement of Afghan refugees emerges as a remarkable success story. The collective efforts of the Secretariat, 42 national resettlement agencies, the Government of Canada and our corporate and community partners have been united by a common purpose: to provide a new start for vulnerable Afghans. Today, we witness a narrative of resilience and determination unfolding among Afghans who have sought refuge in Canada," says Fariborz Birjandian, Co-Chair of the Afghan National Steering Committee. "I offer my heartfelt appreciation to the unwavering commitment of staff and volunteers across the country. It is their tireless dedication that has made this mission a reality."

Reaching this historic milestone is a reflection of the incredible outpouring of support from Canadians coast-to-coast-to-coast. The Secretariat expresses sincere gratitude to everyone who contributed – every donation, helping hand, and uplifting sentiment played a virtual role in the success of this mission.

The journey of resettlement for Afghans continues, and support remains essential. If you wish to donate or get involved, visit our website. The Government of Canada will also continue to prioritize eligible applications already submitted under the Afghan special measures.
